GRAMMAR: Raise / Rise / Arise
These verbs are often confused
To raise = to generate, increase, introduce (transitive – needs somebody to do it)
I raised $2 million in funds. We raised the price. She raised a question.
To rise = to reach a higher point (intransitive)
She rose to be CEO. The sun rises every day.
To arise = to occur / appear (intransitive)
The problem arose when we tested it.
Verbs that can mean the same thing
Tackle – Confront = deal with a problem
They tackled / confronted the pollution issue immediately
Plummet – Plunge = go down dramatically
The price plunged / plummeted today
Threaten – Bully = to intimidate somebody
They bullied / threatened us
